Back to Basics Challenge - Week 7

What's happening in the garden
  • Planting - carrots, leeks, white onions, red onions, zucchini, parsley, lettuce
  • Harvesting - first harvest of winter spuds (baked them, they were perfect :))

  • Observing
    • Broad beans flowering,
    • snow peas and peas starting to crop,
    • new growth on citrus,
    • almond tree covered in new leaves,
    • new buds starting on pear trees,
    • broccoli nearly ready,
    • first of the corn coming up
    • Spuds have wilt (or something)
    • Snow peas and peas just behind the spuds are showing early signs of powdery mildew, and the rose bush a few metres away is covered in aphids (time to commence warfare)
  • Egg total : 10 AND the dog ate 3 of them (yes my fault for leaving them on the outside table and then going out for the day - also eggshells do not agree with dogs).
What I've been doing
  • Planning for The Future
    • Weekly menu plan / shopping list
    • Budget
    • Thinking about watering system for vege beds and dreaming about water tanks
    • Getting organised for overseas visitors
Fun Stuff
  • Building Community
    • Making new amazing friends via the blog, connecting with other mums in cyberspace and, as always, feeling like I get back a thousand times more than what I put out there.
    • Lunch with Miss 4s class Mums (ate the most perfect French Onion Soup ever, at AdLib Bistro in Pymble)
  • Learn a new Skill
    • Old skill reused:  Not rubbing eyes when wearing mascara
Becoming less porky
  • Present weight  74.6kgs (top of healthy weight range for my height 67kgs)
Week Summary
  • On Sunday went to see Joss Whedon speak (he wrote Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Toy Story). Forced self to drink hot chocolate and pistachio macrons at the Guy Lian cafe beforehand
  • Did a lot of writing - but still struggling to hit word count targets for novel.  Finding it hard to balance home, writing, blogging, gardening (as usual)
  • Mid-term and the kids are getting noticeably tired (and cranky), especially Miss 4
  • Felt like I spent most of the week driving
  • Cooked a lot, didn't clean much.

It's really hard to fit it all in isn't it! i only have the 2 kids (4 & 3) and I find it so hard to get anywhere some weeks... I love Belinda's challenge and hope to take it up again soon... when we get the gardens going up at the new house... Your patch seems to be doing really well - I think I need cloches here but maybe I just need to join a group that can be of more help (i.e. local growing conditions)! Good luck with your word counts this week.
